In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
