The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
