The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He fears the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
