Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural management.
